ART DEPARTMENT
NYE was founded on the belief that the Arts are a powerful agent of change and opportunity. The mission of the NYE Arts Program is to provide students with intellectually informed, hands-on instruction in the practice of an array of performing and visual arts within the context of an after school program. Through our arts programs we aim to foster creativity, self-confidence and self-discipline. The goal of each program is to inspire curiosity through careful observation and artistic exploration. Our performing and visual arts curriculum focuses on developmental consideration for each grade level (K-12) and is built upon the ideas of progressive learning, leadership, social emotional learning and performance and presentation.

PERFORMING ARTS
OUR MISSION AND COMMITMENT TO OUR STUDENTS
We believe all students should receive the best quality performing arts experience, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Our philosophy is to bring supreme dance, music, and drama to children of any age. Through our performing arts programs, we aim to foster creativity, self-confidence, and self-discipline. We strive for integrity and a greater experience in all forms of the performing arts while refining a better understanding of the physical body to movement and the mind to the creative process. The arts shape the diverse cultures of past and present society which will in turn shape our students. Our hope is that all of our students, will learn through artistic expression, and have respect for themselves and others. We are passionate about the performing arts and are dedicated to showing that passion through our program.
VISUAL ARTS
OUR MISSION AND COMMITMENT TO OUR STUDENTS
NYE is uniquely poised to affect great change in the youth of New York City. As visual arts educators in the NYE program our challenge is to prepare the children under our care for future success. In “The Arts and Prosocial Impact Study: Program Characteristics and Prosocial Effects” (1998) the research identifies serious art instruction as a necessary condition for effecting prosocial change in children in afterschool settings.
Through our after-school arts activities NYE aims to do just that.
Among the list of goals we have set for ourselves is to develop social and emotional intelligence, including leadership and resilience through skill-building activities. At NYE we know that character traits like social awareness, gratitude, and optimism when nurtured have a significant impact on quality of life, fulfillment and happiness. We will achieve this through dialogue, reflection, and thoughtful artmaking.
